When we think of wine, we often associate its origin, the region of production and the length of fermentation with it. The better the reputation, the better the taste. But what if there were other factors that influenced our choice? After all, a wine should also correspond to our values and demands on life. Biodynamic wine follows this approach. It is produced in harmony with nature and follows the strict requirements of organic cultivation.

What is biodynamic wine?

Biodynamic viticulture avoids pesticides and other chemical additives, such as yeast, fungicides or acid adjustments. Particular attention is paid to the rhythm of nature: the aim is to find a balance between give and take and to affect the naturalness of the environment as little as possible. The cultivation of the grapes therefore follows the phases of the moon.

Instead of fighting effects and consequences, tthis way of working aims to seek the cause and solve the entire problem. Already in 1924, the anthroposophical philosopher Rudolf Steiner explained his findings of the self-sustaining cycle explained between man and nature.

Biodynamic viticulture

This is how the production of biodynamic wine works

To support the vineyard and the vines, the biodynamic winegrower buries cow horns, filled with gravel or cow dung, depending on the position of the moon. After half a year, the contents have become a humus-like substance that is mixed with water and sprayed on the vineyard. The mixture supports nature, has a vitalising effect and strengthens the vines. By taking special care of the plants, the winegrower can harvest better grapes, which in return has an impact on the quality of the wine.

The harvest and the work in the wine cellar also follow the different phases of the moon. The winemaker relinquishes all control and acts according to the energy phases that influence our lives, the plants and thus also the wine. The idea behind is to let man influence as little as possible in order to obtain a purely natural product. This care, respect for nature and self-sustained cultivation is what makes biodynamic wine so distinctive.

Seal and mark for the natural wine

Biodynamic wine therefore goes one step further than organic wine. It meets the standards of the strictest seals Demeter and Biodyvin. This means the whole vineyard is biodynamic, not just certain parts. This includes the integration of feed and animal and the reduction of water consumption. Furthermore, the reduced use of imported materials for pest control and fertilisation as well as the preservation of biodiversity.

The purchase of biodynamic wine is to be preferred locally, it is best to ask your personal wine shop. Alternatively, you can find them in the online register of demeter and Biodyvin numerous biodynamic winegrowers. The latter is an association of currently 175 biodynamic wine farms. These come from France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether the wine tastes better now.
